The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services dropped by her house to speak with her, but found themselves in a construction zone. Its just too hard to write a one-line personal summary or pick a favorite movie, and besides, there are plenty of people who are not going to get dates just by being themselves. They need to fake it. Of course then the initial meeting comes, in real life, and it turns out like the date involving Jim Carey, a 38-year-old pharmaceutical salesman who copied some other guys line about writing award-winning operas:He says he wanted women to know he was funny but was too lazy to think up anything. So he copied Mr. Gallaghers essay for his online profile. A year ago, he arranged to meet a woman for drinks. She asked about his operas. He confessed. “I felt like a balloon deflating,” he says.A lot of people dont even bother to copy clever profiles — or from people outside the local area Thierry Khalfa stole the profile of a nearby screenwriter whose lines included the not-so-special, “”I have a sweet tooth, love my strawberry twizzlers and cheesecake jelly beans.”Mr. Khalfa caught the eye of preschool teacher Marjorie Coon, 48. They exchanged emails, and Ms. Coon wanted to meet Mr. Khalfa in person. Then she discovered he had copied the profile of Mr. Matteo, by coincidence her friend. She let Mr. Khalfa know she knew and dumped him. “I felt he was less than honest, a manipulator and downright stupid,” says Ms. Coon, of Largo, Fla. Mr. Matteo wasnt too happy, either. “Im not Cyrano de Bergerac,” he says, referring to the 19th-century play about a man penning love letters for a rival.One guy actually copied the line “I am the type of person that likes to think of my glass as half full.”Others copy the profiles of the women they ! are inte rested in, to show how similar they are.Of course, by boiling a personality down to a small collection of standardized questions and a picture, social and dating networks are begging to be gamed like this. The main question is why it has taken so long.
